Department of Cardiovascular Surgery

The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Campus Mitte, one of the largest and most innovative academic facilities in Germany, is at the forefront of cardiac surgery. Headed by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Konertz, the department offers all surgical procedures for congenital and acquired heart diseases and diseases of the heart-adjoining vessels.

Charité was the first university hospital in Germany to perform minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Since 1996 many patients have undergone such procedures to repair coronary arteries, heart valves and certain congenital heart defects.

We have replaced 5,000 aortic valves by so-called stentless or biological valves – a number unmatched worldwide which provided us with major expertise in this field. Our team is also leading in so-called Ross interventions (approx. 80 per year) to repair aortic valve defects in children, adolescents and young adults.
