Department of Radiation Oncology and Radiotherapy

Headed by Professor Dr. Volker Budach the Department of Radiation Oncology and Radiotherapy of the Charité Center for Tumor Medicine covers radiotherapy at the locations Campus Charité Mitte, Campus Benjamin Franklin and Campus Virchow-Klinikum. Five linear accelerators are available for percutaneous radiation therapy. Benign tumors undergo orthovoltage therapy.

The department has three linear accelerators, a state-of-the-art brachytherapy system and a radiotherapy-oncology ward. The interdisciplinary therapy approach seeks cooperation with relevant clinical disciplines and specialized organ and tumor centers.

The range of therapies provided by the department encompasses innovative cancer treatment strategies that aim to attack the tumor as aggressively as possible and at the same time reduce side effects.

  • Prostate cancer
  • Head and ENT tumors
  • Treatment of eye tumors with proton therapy (in cooperation with the Department of Ophthalmology and the Helmholzzentrum)
  • Breast cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Gynecological cancers
  • CNS tumors

Moreover, the department focuses on inpatient combined radio-chemotherapy. All other therapies are performed in outpatient centers.

Both campuses share modern technologies such as the Novalis linear accelerator, an MRI-guided hyperthermia system and a TomoTherapy.

Radiation oncology techniques

  • Tomotherapy
  • Stereotaxy (radiosurgery, body stereotaxy, SBRT)
  • Intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT)
  • Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT)
  • Intra-operative radiotherapy (IORT)
  • Total Body Irradiation (TBI)
  • Digital Portal Imaging (digital therapy control)
  • Combined chemo/immunotherapy and biomodulators with radiotherapy
  • Intensity modulated radiotherapy also in RapidArc Rotation technique
  • Stereotactic Convergence radiotherapy and tomotherapy
  • Intra-operative whole body and whole skin radiation
  • Hyperthermia Treatment
