Department of Ophthalmology

While the team of the Department of Ophthalmology headed by Professor Dr. Antonia Joussen treats all diseases of the eye from retinal detachment to glaucoma and corneal grafting it is specialized in the therapy of particularly complex pathologies.

The range of diseases treated and the available therapy options encompasses inter alia:

  • Treatment of age-related macular degeneration with argon laser, photodynamic therapy, VEGF antagonists, triamcinolone, surgical procedures, membrane extraction, macular rotation surgery, retinal pigment epithelium translocation, vitamin supplements
  • Treatment of retinal detachment
  • Treatment of diabetic retinopathy, for example with laser photocoagulation
  • Treatment of cataract with intracapsular and extracapsular surgery
  • Treatment of inflammatory eye diseases such as Behçet’s disease, toxoplasmosis, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease, sarcoidosis, CMV /herpes infection, scleritis posterior or uveitis
  • Corneal diseases with a focus on corneal grafting
  • Glaucoma therapy
  • Retinopathy of prematurity

The Center for Refractive Surgery is part of the Department of Ophthalmology. It focuses on corneal and lens surgery to correct refractive errors. The center offers the most recent laser technology, the so-called Femto laser. In conventional LASIK (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) the surgeon uses a mechanical scalpel, a microkeratome, to cut a very thin flap of the corneal tissue. In femto-LASIK the microkeratome is replaced by a femtosecond laser which means the procedure is performed without any mechanical devices.
