Medical Department, Division of Infectiology and Pneumonology

The Medical Department, Division of Infectiology and Pneumonology headed by Professor Dr. Norbert Suttorp not only offers a wide range of clinical services, it also plays a unique role in science: as the only national professorship for infectiology it is the leading academic research and teaching institution in its discipline.

With regard to therapy the department focuses on the following areas:

  • Diagnosis and therapy of infectious diseases such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, infections of the gastrointestinal tract, meningitis, endorcarditis, and wound infections. A focus lies on the treatment of patients with multi-resistant pathogens.
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Tropical medicine
  • Treatment of pulmonary infection and of infections of the respiratory system caused by tumors or chronic diseases (chronic obstructive bronchitis, bronchial asthma, interstitial lung diseases)
  • Internal intensive care medicine

Helping, healing and the patient’s well-being are the core values of our medical work. With regard to research the team participates in several multi-center studies to test new drugs with the aim to improve the treatment of AIDS, pneumonia and asthma. We also cooperate closely with all other departments of Charité and we particularly support the different ICUs with regard to complex issues concerning infectiology, tropical medicine and pneumonology.
