Department of General, Visceral and Thoracic Surgery

The Department of General, Visceral and Thoracic Surgery headed by Professor Dr. Johann Pratschke at Campus Klinikum-Virchow is one of the largest surgical clinics in Germany and thus offers a broad range of clinical services. The team is specialized in transplantation medicine, surgery of the liver, the bile ducts and the pancreas. 

The range of clinical services encompasses:

  • Esophagus and stomach surgery
  • Liver and bile duct surgery (Transplants, surgical treatment of liver metastases, cholangiocellular and hepatocellular carcinoma)
  • Pancreas surgery (pancreas transplants)
  • Kidney transplants
  • Intestinal surgery (small intestine transplants, colon surgery)
  • Endocrinal surgery (surgery of the thyroid and the parathyroid gland)
  • Vascular surgery (brain-supplying vessels, visceral artery, occlusions of arm, leg and mesenteric arteries, permanent shunts)
  • Lung surgery
  • Minimally invasive treatment, e.g. of hernias and gall stones, appendicitis, colon diverticulitis, reflux diseases or liver cysts
  • Intensive care medicine


One focus of the department is the surgical treatment of esophageal and colon carcinoma, which is frequently approached in an interdisciplinary manner in cooperation with oncological and gastroenterological divisions of Charité. In order to be able to offer the patients innovative therapy concepts Professor Pratschke and his team regularly participate in large international studies.
