Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery

The Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery headed by Professor Dr. Norbert Haas is the largest center for trauma surgery/orthopedics in Germany. As a university-based maximum care facility the center covers all aspects of surgical and conservative treatment in its clinical discipline. Within the center, the following highly specialized Centers of Excellence were established to cover the different sub-specialties with an interdisciplinary approach and providing best possible know-how:

Spine Center

This center performs spinal surgery following injuries, to correct congenital or acquired spine deformations and to treat tumor diseases and inflammatory or degenerative damages.

Center for Endoprosthetics and Reconstructive Surgery

The focus is on joint-preserving surgery and on endoprosthetics for all large joints, particularly corrective surgery following several prior interventions.

Musculoskeletal Tumor Center

The focus is on the treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors including complex endoprosthetics following tumor resection, vessel replacement surgery and soft tissue covers.

Shoulder, elbow and hand surgery

Treatment of all forms of injuries to shoulder, elbow and hand and of degenerative diseases of the upper extremities.

Ankle and foot surgery

The team offers the entire range of reconstructive surgery including soft tissue covers, own minimally invasive techniques and ankle endoprosthetics.

Knee surgery, knee orthopedics and sports injuries

The focus is on the treatment of sports and joint injuries using minimally invasive/arthroscopic surgical techniques.

The teams of the Centers of Excellence closely cooperate with experts based at other Charité locations. All senior physicians in these highly specialized teams have many years of experience in the diagnosis, treatment and counseling of trauma surgery and orthopedic diseases.

Julius Wolff Institute for Biomechanics and Musculoskeletal Regeneration

The Julius Wolff Institute for Biomechanics and Musculoskeletal Regeneration headed by Professor Dr. Georg Duda is a research institute. Created in 2008 following the merger of the research lab of the Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery and the clinical biomechanics lab of the Department of Orthopedics the institute conducts interdisciplinary research in orthopedics and trauma surgery. In close cooperation with the Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery and other departments the research focuses on the biological and mechanical factors influencing the healing process of fractures positively and negatively.

Seven working groups conduct research in the following areas

  • Biomechanical and functional assessment of the musculoskeletal system during regeneration and after joint replacement
  • Basic bone research
  • Biological and mechanical aspects of bone healing processes
  • Cellular regeneration processes
  • Development of methods to improve bone regeneration (drug-carrying implants or research on the stimulation of healing processes by bone replacement materials)
  • Interdependencies of ultrasound and biological tissue and cells and their use for diagnostic and therapy purposes
