Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is part of the CharitéCenter for Traumatology and Reconstructive Surgery. With its interdisciplinary departments, research facilities and cooperation it is one of the most modern institutions in Germany for dental, cranial and maxillofacial surgery. Headed by Professor Dr. Dr. Bodo Hoffmeister, medical director of the department, the department covers the following areas:

Interdisciplinary und reconstructive plastic facial surgery

Correction of congenital or acquired functional and/or esthetic cranio/oral-maxillary defects. The focus here is on functional reconstruction and rehabilitation rather than on esthetic aspects.

Correction of so-called dysgnathias i.e. tooth irregularities.

The experienced team and the ultra modern equipment of the areas implantology & specialized prosthetics ensure highest quality treatment and care.

The department offers all therapies to treat salivary gland stones and all other diseases or tumors of the salivary gland.

Skin resurfacing with modern laser technology (ultra pulsed carbon dioxide lasers or YAG laser)

Epithetics

The Berlin Centre for Artificial Facial Parts (Berliner Zentrum für künstliche Gesichtsteile) treats patients with facial loss caused by injuries or diseases.

Craniofacial malformations

Correction of all types of craniofacial malformations, from simple birthmarks to cleft lip, jaw and palate and complex syndromes.

Treatment of functional speech, voice and swallowing impediments.

Further specialties

A further focus is the treatment of cleft lips, jaws and palates – the most frequent birth defects. All physicians of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery are members of the respective professional societies and are always up to date on the developments in their specialties.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery cooperates closely with other Charité departments. It is for example a division of the CharitéCenter for Traumatology and Reconstructive Surgery, it operates the Berliner Zentrum für Mechatronische Medizintechnik jointly with the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, it works closely with the CharitéCenter for Dental, Oral and Maxillary Medicine and at the Berlin Centre for Artificial Facial Parts it treats patients with facial loss caused by injuries or diseases.
