Congenital heart defects, disorders already acquired in childhood or cardiac arrhythmias—Professor Dr. Felix Berger and his team are highly specialized in diagnosis and therapy of small hearts. The specialists care for 1,500 inpatient and 2,500 outpatient cases annually. The spectrum of the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Cardiology includes the entire range of diagnostic and therapeutic measures, such as treatment of very complex illnesses, among others, those of newborn children with critical congenital heart defects.

 This includes inter alia the correction of single ventricle defects (Fontan procedure) and arterial switch operations in patients with transposition of the great arteries (TGA) and Norwood operation in children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

Currently, Charité is the hospital with the worldwide largest number of successful applications of a specific pediatric assistance system used for infants.

Other fields of concentration are:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of slow and fast cardiac arrhythmias
  • Identification and therapy of ventricular tachycardia/ heart palpitations
  • Interventions of all kinds and degrees of difficulty, in the cardiac catheter laboratory specially configured for pediatrics
  • Invasive heart catheter diagnosis and interventional cardiology
  • Occlusion of atrial septum defects with umbrella devices and of persistent ductus arteriosus
  • Opening of the atrial septum and widening in the case of atrial septum defects
  • Perinatal care of newborns with congenital heart defects in cooperation with the department of neonatology
  • Perioperative care in cooperation with the German Heart Center Berlin (DHZB) and the department of cardiovascular surgery
  • Pre-natal diagnosis and consulting in cooperation with pre-natal diagnostics
  • Therapy for cardiac arrhythmias in close cooperation with the electrophysiology department
  • Treatment of blockages caused by blood vessel anomalies


All wards are equipped with the most modern, centrally controlled monitors for cardiac rhythm, respiration and oxygen saturation, arrhythmia analysis and invasive monitoring. The department’s specially equipped heart catheter laboratory is able to perform complex interventions such as balloon dilatations of all heart valves and stent implantation suited to children. In the Center for rhythmology and invasive electrophysiology in childhood and for adolescents with congenital heart defects, experts have all the therapeutic options needed for treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.
