Department of Pediatric Nephrology

Diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases of the kidneys and urogenital system for children and adolescents at the Charité are the responsibility of Professor Dr. Uwe Querfeld and his colleagues. The department has the only centre in Europe with a dialysis station capable of performing nocturnal hemodialysis for children and adolescents.

In addition the department’s services extend to treatment of these disorders:

  • Glomerulonephritus
  • Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS)
  • Hypertension
  • Kidney deformities
  • Kidney diseases from congenital metabolic disorders, such as cystinosis
  • Kidney stones / ureteral stones
  • Nephritic syndrome
  • Renal microsomia (growth hormone therapy)
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Urination disorders

In addition all kidney substitution (dialysis) therapies are covered:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases of the kidneys and urogenital system for children and adolescents at the Charité are the responsibility of Professor Dr. Uwe Querfeld and his colleagues. The dPeritoneal dialysis: outpatient peritoneal dialysis and instruction for blood purification at home using a catheter introduced through the abdomen
  • Hemodialysis: Outpatient kidney substitution therapy using a shunt or a blood vessel catheter
  • Transplantations

 

The nephrologists in the department have access to the most modern diagnostic procedures for their work, e.g. kidney biopsy, 24-hour blood pressure measurement, impedance measurement and kidney function testing using chromium-EDTA-clearance. The experts can also draw on the diagnostic procedures available to radiology and internal medicine because of the close cooperation with other departments.
