Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neurosurgery

A special feature of Charité is the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neurosurgery, specialized in neurosurgical care of youth and adolescents under the direction of PD Dr. Ernst-Johannes Haberl. The division with the Department of Neurology at Charité and is thus an element of the CharitéCenter for Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

The department specializations:

  • Treatment of disorders of equilibrium in the production and drainage of fluids in the head and spinal cord (hydrocephalus)
  • Therapies for various forms of craniosyntosis, the premature occlusion of growth plates in the cranium
  • Treatment of all kinds of tumors
  • Operative treatment methods for spastics
  • Therapies for various forms of spina bifida

 

The section benefits from international cooperation with renowned institutions that permits global exchange of experts and treatment beyond borders. For example the project “pediatric surgery in Tallinn” in Estonia—under patronage of German entertainer Dieter-Thomas Heck—enables children to obtain therapy either locally or at Charité. Children from Byelorussia with complicated brain tumor illnesses can obtain an operation in Berlin through the initiative “Pediatric Oncology Minsk”.

The pediatric neurosurgery section is a part of the department of neurosurgery at Charité and therefore offers patient treatment regardless of age. The cooperation even extends to joint activities in research, teaching and physician training.
